Search Engines enable you to search the internet for items using a variety of criteria. The most popular method is simply to search for words or phrases. Most Search Engines have advanced features which allow you to introduce Boolean operators (AND, NOT) resulting in a more sophisticated query.
My favourite is Alta Vista. This has advanced search capabilities which enable you to search for other items such as graphic images. Check out their advanced search help page. Just a quick warning - the link I have given is to the site in the US. Although Alta Vista has set up international sites, at the time of writing, registrations to Alta Vista (see next section) seem only to be picked up by the US site. It is therefore the most comprehensive.
All-in-One is a site which enables you to submit a search query to a number of engines (including Alta Vista).
I used Alta Vista to find out about polydactyl cats. In truth, I was unaware of this term when I first created my home page. I had used the term 'extra toe' to describe myself and figured other cats might do the same. I used the Alta Vista advanced search to enter the following search string:
"extra toe*" NEAR "cat*"
the * (asterisk) symbol is used here to represent any combination of letters. So toe* will pick out toe, toes, toed etc., and cat* will pick out cat, cats.
Unfortunately this feature can be a little too wide ranging and include things you don't really want. One example was from a footwear store which mentioned EXTRA TOE straps in their latest CATalogue! Some references were also missed because the use of the NEAR clause. (The reference to 'cat' being several sentences away from the reference to 'extra toes'). I found the following strategy more successful, and conducted the following two separate searches:
"extra toe*" AND "cat"
"extra toe*" AND "cats"
The search was subsequently extended by simply searching for the word 'polydactyl'. I have seen the terms 'double-paw' and 'double-pawed' used, so the Alta Vista syntax would be "double-paw*". You might find it worth repeating this without the hyphen. I haven't conducted a search using this term myself.
A Registration Engine is a site that posts your pages to a number of Search Engines. This will ensure that the content of your site will be picked up when a query is performed using the Search Engines.
!Register-It! remembers your details so you don't have to re-enter them each time you use the service.
Submit-It is another site offering a similar service.
My Home Page uses the (free) guest book services of GuestWorld. Guest Books are essentially databases hosted on remote servers. When visitors 'sign-in', a new record in the database is created. Guest Book providers such as Lpage, also give the owners access so that records may be deleted.
The counter on my page is provided by Page Count. They now do a guestbook as well.
IBM AlphaWorks
IBM AlphaWorks is a fascinating site previewing IBM internet technologies, many of which are available as free downloads. Have a look at the PanoramIX browser Plug-in.
MySpeech is a speaker-independent recognition program that enables you to navigate to web pages using you microphone. The commands it will recognise are:
MySelf: returns to Richard Pratt's Home Page
MyPets: Lenny the polydactyl cat
MyHouse: Aerial view of 'Little Richley'
MyKids: Thomas and Katherine
MySearch: Alta Vista
MyWeather: BBC weather page
MyBookMark1: My page of useful internet utilities.
Some of these links will have the MySpeech banner on them so you can continue browsing. Others (including the links to Alta Vista and the BBC) do not, so you will have to use the back button.
So go ahead! Click and hold your mouse on the 'Push to speak' area of the banner below. When you have finished speaking one of the phrases shown above, release the mouse button. After a brief pause the new page will load. If your phrase has not been recognised you will probably arrive at a MySpeech page. Simply press 'Back' on your browser.
